Venture Group Trailhead Project

Facing the replacement of the General Morgan Bridge on Main Street in Slatington local business leaders, the Borough of Slatington, Washington Township, the NL School District and the CLIU 21 banded together in cooperation with PennDOT in what became known as the “Bridge Club”. Monthly meetings and daily efforts of those who attended resulted in a successful replacement of Slatington’s Main Street bridge utilizing a local detour. The bridge was rededicated with General Morgan in attendance.

The Bridge Club decided that it was necessary to continue the momentum generated by the bridge replacement and solidified itself to become a joint effort among the following community groups: Slatington Lions Club, Slatington Rotary Club, Slatington Masonic Lodge 440, Northern Lehigh Future Focus, Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce, Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, Slatington Borough, Washington Township, Northern Lehigh Properties of Merit, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, GFW Women’s Club of Slatington , Walnutport Canal Association, Walnutport Borough, Northern Lehigh Community Center, and the Walnutport Playground Association. The group chose to call itself the Venture Group and is a pioneering a level of community cooperation found nowhere else. The Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce sits as the Chair of the Venture Group.

The first project the Venture Group set its sights on is the improvement of the Slatington Trailhead. Located next to the Lehigh River on Main Street in Slatington at the intersection of 7 trails the Slatington Trailhead is truly unique offering the potential to make the Northern Lehigh area even better than it already is! The trailhead will provide users of the trail access to modern bathroom facilities, a pavilion to stop and rest, the services of the local businesses, and parking vital to those who would begin or end their use of the any of 8 trails. In addition, the trailhead building will have functioning kitchen space with which to offer local service clubs the ability to hold special events enhancing future use of the trails.

Construction has begun. We have been able to receive pledges, in kind services and donations totaling $90,500 of the $105,000 needed to complete the project. We are looking for donations from our neighborhood partners. Your donation will allow us to purchase materials allowing us to take advantage of donated labor keeping our project costs to the proposed $105,000. Minimum donations of $1,000 will receive permanent small sized signage on the building with your name and/or logo on it. Minimum donations of $5,000 will prominently display your name and/or logo on a large sign on the trailhead building. All donations, regardless of the amount, are welcome, needed and appreciated. Those who donate will be mentioned in ongoing press releases in addition to the signage placed inside the pavilion. If you wish to contribute money, time or talents to this project please contact the Historical Society specifying the Trailhead Project by email at http://www.northernlehighhistoricalsociety.com or by regular mail at PO Box 101, Slatington PA 18080."
